Lip Enhancement Aftercare

You may have slight swelling, tenderness and/or bruising at the injection sites this is normal, swelling and/or bruising tends to worsen over 48 hours before it gets better. Most side effects will be minor and you will be able to resume most activities once the treatment is done.

  • To help reduce any swelling, itching or bruising you can apply ice to your lips afterwards using an icepack or ice cube covered with a cloth (do not apply ice direct to the lip skin).  If your lips have bruised you can apply arnica cream (purchase over the counter) regularly to help it subside.  Bruising and swelling is dependant on the individual you may have had fillers before and never bruised and then the next you may experience bruising or swelling. Factors such as too much caffeine, green tea, anticoagulant medications, alcohol, smoking, previous illness, previous cold/virus, skin sensitivity and even the female menstrual cycle can increase bruising, bleeding & swelling.

  • Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water this will help your body heal.

  • Avoid high temperatures like steam rooms, saunas or heated exercise for at least 48 hours.  High heat can make swelling more pronounced.

  • Try to sleep with your head elevated on pillows to reduce any swelling.  Do not sleep on your face.

  • Avoid any strenuous exercise for 48 hours after the lip treatment. Elevated blood pressure and heart rate from exercise can make swelling and bruising worse.  Its fine to engage in light walking style exercise.

  • Avoid any make up on your lips for at least 24 hours after to avoid infection.  Vaseline is fine just make sure applied with a clean finger.

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after having lip fillers.  Alcohol can cause inflammation, increase likelihood of bruising and make swelling worse.

  • If you have a small blister appear on your lips 2-3 days after treatment this is more than likely a cold sore which has been triggered by the needle trauma to the lip. If this is the case then treatment can be purchased from your local chemist.  If you decide to continue with lip fillers after a cold sore then you can get tablets to prevent an outbreak.

  • You may feel lumps at the injection sites especially where a thicker filler has been used this is normal in some for the first few weeks. As the water is attracted to the area of filler the lumps should soften and disperse, if not return to your practitioner as a lip massage using the correct technique can help to disperse the filler that may have congealed in one area due to lack of hydration.

Adverse signs to look for:

  • You may experience slight tenderness following treatment but this should subside gradually day by day, if you find pain is increasing and becoming unbearable please get back in touch.

  • If your skin appears white in colour and cool in temperature please get back in touch.

In Final....

  • You will see results immediately with lip fillers but once the swelling goes down the results will not look so pronounced just try to remember your initial expected result.

  • Please give yourself up to 4 weeks until the filler has settled completely to see your lasting result.

  • Results last an average of 6 months, but this is very much dependant on the filler injected, and the individual and how quickly there body naturally breaks down the filler.  If this happens too quickly a thicker filler may be required going forward but always best to start natural than to go to big to begin with and be stuck with a result you dislike.
